Creating to Learn, helps educators to develop multimedia projects that are focused on the core concepts of the curriculum

The Challenge – Many schools and school districts spend million of dollars on infrastructure, network design, and instructional technology without planning how they will actually use the technology to enrich the academic curriculum. After all, if the technology doesn’t support curricular goals, what’s the point?

But that is exactly what happens in many cases. Administrators, teachers, and library media specialists across the country have been using the technology available to them by simply adding on the technology: having students take automated online quizzes or assigning them slide presentations rather than paper-based reports. So what happens? Students find pages on the Internet, cut and paste the information onto their slides, and then spend class time playing with colors and animation. All the technology that the schools have invested in does nothing to help the students learn important curricular concepts.

The Solution – An award-winning classroom teacher, instructional technology facilitator, researcher, and author, Jacqueline Keane has developed a plan to infuse instructional technology into the curriculum. This innovative model, known as Creating to Learn, helps educators to develop multimedia projects that are focused on the core concepts of the curriculum. The result? Students gain a deeper understanding of core concepts and achieve better scores on their state and national exams.

Jackie consults and collaborates with teachers, library media specialists, technology coordinators, and administrators to design technology-rich curriculum units. These units employ instructional technology in a way that advances students’ information-, visual-, and technical-literacy skills—all the while enhancing their understanding of core curricular concepts.
